Note: This is the first in what will be an ongoing series of antiquarian, public domain magazine articles or book excerpts related to Lone Star history and culture. As material piles up, paid subscribers will have their own reference library of material no longer under copyright protection. Of course, just because it’s out there—somewhere—doesn’t necessary mean you’ll be be able to locate a copy unless you prowl used and rare bookstores and antique malls as much as I do. Fortunately, for only slightly more than a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte a month, you’ll have unlimited access to Texas Magazine’s library. The more readers who subscribe, the more material I will be able to post. Not to mention the original material I will be writing, and my archive of previously published articles and essay.

Mike Cox's Texas Magazine is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
